Chiropractic is the largest alternative healthcare system in the world. It is based on the fact that for a healthy body you need a healthy spine.

On your initial visit you can expect a thorough assessment of your problem, which include:

  • - musculoskeletal testing
  • - posture & movement analysis
  • - muscle strength tests
  • - nerve reflex testing

Depending on your situation we may need to refer you for further testing before treatment can be applied. We use the services of local radiographic clinics who bulk bill at no cost to you.

Chiropractic is essentially a great way to get your whole body working better.  Even though the art and philosophy of adjusting the spine is recorded in the history books as thousands of years old, the science is relatively new.

How it works:

Your brain influences every function that your body has.

 1. It receives input from your surrounding environment, both external and internal.

2. It processes this incoming information.

3. Then it produces a response in your body.

For example, think of a time when you walked on uneven ground.
Receptors in your feet told your brain that the ground is not flat. Your brain made sense of this incoming information and told the muscles in your feet, legs and hips to adapt to the uneven surface.

All parts of your body function in this way, your stomach and intestines, your heart and lungs and your muscles. Through the nerves in your body, signals are constantly being sent in response to a changing environment.
When abnormal movement of a joint occurs (particularly in the spine), whether it be restricted or unstable, it can affect the quality of signals travelling around the body, leading to dysfunction and/or pain and degenerative changes.

Now here’s the Chiropractic bit:
A chiropractic adjustment can restore normal function to a joint and help regulate the nerve signals travelling through your body.
At Body and Health Creation, we safely and gently perform spinal checks on people of all ages, especially expecting Mums and newborns. (International chiropractic paediatric association - http://www.icpa4kids.org/)

What is the difference between chiropractic and osteopathy?
Both the practices of chiropractic and osteopathy started from a belief that the body needs to move properly in order to be healthy. When this correct movement is restored and maintained the whole body can benefit. However the techniques and principles of what they do can differ. For a description of osteopathy click here.

What to expect
Your initial consultation is to determine whether or not chiropractic is what you need, so therefore thorough physical examination will take place.  You will receive your first adjustment on your second visit after all the necessary testing and assessment has taken place.
A course of adjustments may be recommended depending on your situation. You may receive exercises to help with your current problem or to keep your spine healthy for the future.
Remember : You are responsible for your health and it is you that does the healing. No doctor has ever healed a patient, they simply assist the body, to do what it does naturally!
The origin of the word Doctor comes from a Latin word meaning ‘to teach’. That’s why everything from the assessment procedures to the adjusting techniques are explained in detail and advice on posture and exercise is central to your time at our clinic.

What is an adjustment?
A Chiropractic adjustment is a precise, controlled  and rapid thrust applied to a joint that is not moving correctly. The adjustment can be performed very gently, by hand or adjusting instrument (Activator). The aim is to restore normal movement in a joint and to stimulate nerve pathways that influence brain and central nervous system function.
Other techniques which help include lumbopelvic blocking, where wedge shaped blocks are placed under your pelvis while you lie comfortably on the table. This allows tension to be released and joint movement to return while you simply breathe and relax.

What is the popping or cracking sound?
Occasionally a chiropractic adjustment is accompanied by a crack or popping sound, this is not the aim of an adjustment nor does it mean anything is actually cracking or breaking. Most joints in the body are contained in sealed capsules, inside a joint capsule is fluid and gas, as the range of motion in a joint is increased, gas can shift around in the fluid and create a ‘pop’ or ‘crack’ sound.
You may notice this phenomenon when a friend ‘pops’ their knuckles or even their own neck! Although this sometimes feels good, they may be causing damage.
