WHICH IS BETTER OSTEOPATH OR CHIROPRACTOR?
Osteopaths and chiropractors provide a differing service with both being potentially beneficial for issues relating to the back. Whilst osteopaths focus more on the muscles, tendons and musculoskeletal system, chiropractors focus on the spinal chord and joints. Depending on the nature of the condition, either can be beneficial for treating conditions relating to the back.
WHO FOUNDED OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE?
Andrew Taylor Still MD, DO is credited with being the founder of osteopathy and osteopathic medicine. He was a highly respected physician, surgeon and author who put into practice the methods of osteopathic treatment. Osteopathy has since expanded to incorporate other methods of treatment, however the basic principles of treating the muscles, tendons and musculoskeletal system remain the same.
WHO ARE OSTEOPATHS?
Osteopaths are highly accredited physicians who are governmentally registered to provide their service. They provide treatment of the body’s muscles, tendons and musculoskeletal system in order to provide a greater standard of health and well-being for the patient. This is done with a hands-on approach as well as through education and ongoing rehabilitation.
WHY OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE?
Osteopathic medicine can be an effective form of treatment for people suffering from conditions of the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and musculoskeletal system. It is a specialised area of practice that focuses on treating these areas of the body. The treatment is designed to improve the health and wellbeing of the patient, as well as create a greater level of mobility.
WHY OSTEOPATHY?
Osteopathy can be an effective form of treatment for patients suffering from conditions of the muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments and musculoskeletal system. It differs from other areas of practice as it emphasises the treatment of these specific parts of the body. Osteopathy can be a great method of treatment as helps reduce pain and discomfort, and can alleviate symptoms of stress and anxiety.
DO OSTEOPATHS GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL?
Osteopaths study at registered training facilities over a five year period. Not only this, but they are required to undergo extensive training in a practical setting before being able to receive their Doctor of Osteopathy (DO). Once they have completed this training they become governmentally registered to provide treatment to patients.
ARE OSTEOPATHS ANY GOOD?
Osteopaths have the ability to provide specific treatment for conditions relating to the muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints and musculoskeletal system. If a patient is suffering from a condition relating to these areas of the body, then there is a good chance they can provide effective treatment and rehabilitation. As clinicians trained in general practice medicine, they have the ability to refer a patient on to a different specialist if the condition is not in their area of expertise.
ARE OSTEOPATHS SAFE?
Osteopaths have a generally low level of reported adverse effects as a result of treatment. The same goes for side effects. Based on this, it is fair to assume that as a whole osteopathy is a generally safe practice. The team at Body and Health Creation would never treat a patient if their condition is out of area of expertise, and we will refer them on to a specialist who can assist with their condition.
CAN OSTEOPATHS PRESCRIBE MEDICATION?
As osteopaths are registered as general practice clinicians, they have the ability to prescribe medicine. However, Body and Health Creation will not prescribe medicine to a patient if we feel the condition is out of our area of expertise. Instead, we will refer them on to a medical practice who is more suitable to prescribe medicine for their specific condition.
CAN OSTEOPATHY HELP WITH ANXIETY?
As osteopathic treatment is hands on and incorporates methods such as Swedish Massage to treat patients, it is believed to help with stress and anxiety. Of course, each patient is different, and may not feel an alleviation of anxiety after treatment. However, as a rule, it is believes that yes, osteopathic treatment can reduce the effects of stress and anxiety.
CAN OSTEOPATHY HELP WITH SCIATICA?
Certain osteopathic treatments can help with the treatment of the causes of sciatica, and it couldn’t hurt to hold a consultation with an osteopath. However, we may find that the causes of your sciatica are being caused by a different condition, in which case we will have to refer you back to your general practitioner or on to a different specialist for treatment.
DO OSTEOPATHS CRACK BACKS?
It depends on the patient. If the patient’s condition requires it, the osteopath may conduct a move called a manipulation in which a fast movement is put through a joint (often done to a spinal joint) which can produce a “clicking” or “cracking” joint. So, as with many other treatments relating to osteopathy, it is patient-specific.
DOES OSTEOPATHIC MANIPULATION WORK?
Of course, this is dependent on the specific patient and the nature of their condition. Of course, osteopathic treatment can have a positive effect in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients regarding certain injuries of the muscles, tendons and musculoskeletal system, but as with any other treatment for other conditions, it is on a patient-specific basis that the treatment works.
DOES OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE WORK?
Osteopathic medicine, like all other medicinal practices, works on a patient-specific basis. Whilst there are great numbers of successful results for patients, just with other treatments for other conditions, there is no guarantee of success. If an osteopath at Body and Health Creation feels that the treatment is not suitable for a patient, they will refer them on to a specialist who can likely better treat their condition.
DOES OSTEOPATHY HURT?
Osteopathy is not intended to provide any pain to patients. Most treatments are comfortable and should not provide the patient with any pain or discomfort. However, depending on the nature of the condition and its severity, the patient may experience some discomfort, but this is only in order to create a release from pain and discomfort in the future.
DOES OSTEOPATHY WORK FOR BACK PAIN?
Depending on the condition, osteopathy can provide a great release from the pain and discomfort caused by conditions of the back. However, osteopathy is different to chiropractic treatment, and may not have the same effect as the methods used by chiropractors in the treating of conditions of the back and spine.
DOES OSTEOPATHY WORK FOR MIGRAINES?
The musculoskeletal manipulation techniques utilised by osteopaths are designed to ease the tension of the muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments. Effective treatment of these parts of the body, as well as effective trigger point therapy (an incorporated method of osteopathy) can help relieve the effects of migraine. If we find that the patient’s migraines are not treatable through osteopathic methods, we will refer them on to a different specialist.
IS OSTEOPATHY A GOOD CAREER?
Well, we think so! At Body and Health Creation, we love what we do, otherwise we wouldn’t have trained so hard to do it. We love nothing more than seeing improvements in our patients’ health and wellbeing, and seeing their condition gradually improve through the rehabilitation stages. We believe that osteopathy can be a really effective method of treatment, and we love doing it as a result.
IS OSTEOPATHY ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE?
We wouldn’t say so. After all, alternative medicinal practices can pretty much spring up out of nowhere, and certain “alternative medicine” providers often don’t require any training or certification at all. We undergo extensive university training (five years minimum) and placements to receive governmentally registered certification so, no, we don’t believe it is “alternative medicine”.
IS OSTEOPATHY COVERED BY MEDICARE?
Unfortunately at this time osteopathy is only covered by Medicare if you are on an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) scheme from your general practitioner. This allows for patients with ongoing conditions to receive up to five years of allied health care. However, we here at Body and Health Creation aim to keep our prices as affordable as possible, as we don’t believe this important treatment should be out of budget for everyday Melburnians.
IS OSTEOPATHY LEGITIMATE?
Yes, as legitimate as any other specialised medicinal practice. The osteopaths at Body and Health Creation have all had a minimum of five years’ university training and countless years of practice to have the ability to be a governmentally registered practitioner in the field.

Hopefully we could clarify a few things for you!
